Cooley and Marion Clark.\u00a0 The two men were equal partners in a 100,000-acre ranch; however, the partners determined that there was not enough room for both of them in their settlement, and agreed to settle the issue over a game of &#8220;Seven Up&#8221; (with the winner taking the ranch and the loser leaving).\u00a0 After the game seemed to have no winner in sight, Clark said, &#8220;If you can show low, you win.&#8221;\u00a0 Cooley cut the deck to the deuce of clubs (the lowest possible card) and replied, &#8220;Show low it is.&#8221;\u00a0 Show Low&#8217;s main street is named &#8220;Deuce of Clubs&#8221; in remembrance.<\/p>\n<p>I left Show Low on hwy 60 headed for Springerville, AZ.\u00a0 I was almost immediately out of the pine trees and on high altitude plains.\u00a0 Looking around you would swear that you&#8217;re in Wyoming or Montana &#8211; I still have the buckle somewhere.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a story for another time though &#8211; remind me and I&#8217;ll tell you.<\/p>\n<p>About 50 miles past Quemado, between the towns of Datil and Magdalena you will find the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karl_G._Jansky_Very_Large_Array\">VLA<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve seen it before.\u00a0 Maybe you remember it from the 1997 Jodie Foster movie &#8211; <em>Contact<\/em>.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Radio telescope\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radio_telescope\">radio telescope<\/a> comprises 27 independent antennae, each of which has a dish diameter of 82\u00a0feet and weighs 230 tons.\u00a0 The antennae are distributed along the three arms of a track, shaped in Y configuration, each arm on the Y is 13 MILES long!!\u00a0 Using the rail tracks that follow each of these arms and a specially designed lifting locomotive the antennas can be physically relocated.\u00a0 There are four commonly used configurations and the observatory normally cycles through all the various possible configurations every 16 months; the antennas are moved every three to four months.\u00a0 They are grouped very tightly right now.\u00a0 The <a title=\"Very Long Baseline Array\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Very_Long_Baseline_Array\">Very Long Baseline Array<\/a> (VLBA), an array of ten dishes located from Hawaii in the west to the U.S. Virgin Islands in the east constitutes the world&#8217;s largest dedicated, full-time astronomical instrument.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-67 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?resize=584%2C195\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?resize=300%2C100 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?resize=768%2C256 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?resize=1024%2C341 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-VLA.jpg?resize=500%2C167 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Fifty miles down the road is Socorro.\u00a0 While I was getting gas I evaluated my situation and decided I would stay here for the night.\u00a0 Socorro has an interesting story:\u00a0 In June 1598, Juan de O\u00f1ate led a group of Spanish settlers through the Jornada del Muerto (journey of the dead man), an inhospitable patch of desert that ends just south of the present-day city of Socorro.\u00a0 As the Spaniards emerged from the desert, <a title=\"Piro Pueblo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piro_Pueblo\">Piro<\/a> Indians of the pueblo of Teypana gave them food and water.\u00a0 Therefore, the Spaniards renamed this pueblo Socorro, which means &#8220;help&#8221;
