Pensacola, FL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was cold leaving Sharpsburg and I had on just about everything I own trying to stay warm.\u00a0 This is the first time I&#8217;ve had to put the cold weather gear on, and luckily I brought enough of it that I was mostly warm throughout the day.\u00a0 All bundled up I&#8217;m sure I look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy spray painted black.\u00a0 And even if it doesn&#8217;t look that way, it feels that way.\u00a0 I was supposed to go to Montgomery, AL yesterday but all the rain all day kept me holed up where I was.\u00a0 It was still spitting rain on me for the first three hours or so but it was MUCH better weather than what I would have been riding in the day before.<\/p>\n<p>I was out of Georgia and into Alabama quickly this morning and spent most of the day riding the back roads in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweet_Home_Alabama\">Sweet Home Alabama<\/a>, the 22nd state admitted on December 14, 1819.\u00a0 Alabama has some great roads and since this was going to be my last opportunity to ride the back roads on this trip, I took my time and enjoyed the relaxing ride.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-276 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?resize=584%2C292\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?resize=300%2C150 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?resize=768%2C384 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?resize=1024%2C512 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road1.jpg?resize=500%2C250 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-277 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?resize=584%2C292\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?resize=300%2C150 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?resize=768%2C384 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?resize=1024%2C512 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Road2.jpg?resize=500%2C250 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-278 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg?resize=768%2C576 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg?resize=400%2C300 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Tuskegee.jpg?w=800 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>After many tranquil miles, I came upon the town of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuskegee,_Alabama\">Tuskegee, AL<\/a>.\u00a0 Sure, I&#8217;ve heard of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuskegee_Airmen\">Tuskegee Airmen<\/a>, they were the first squadron of black pilots (fighter and bomber) trained in the U.S. Military for service in WWII.\u00a0 But there&#8217;s lots of stuff about Tuskegee that I didn&#8217;t know.\u00a0 This area of the country is where the whole civil rights struggle took place, and this town was heavily involved.\u00a0 Tuskegee was the subject of a U.S. Supreme Court decision on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerrymandering\">gerrymandering<\/a>.\u00a0 Back in 1957, seems they had a 28 sided &#8220;district&#8221; that excluded nearly all black residents, and included all the white residents &#8211; that&#8217;s bad, okay&#8230;..\u00a0 One of the teachers at Booker T. Washington&#8217;s Tuskegee University was George Washington Carver.\u00a0 LOTS of history here &#8211; but I kept riding.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t get out of the south without saying something about the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kudzu_in_the_United_States\">kudzu<\/a>. This stuff is all over the place and this house may not even be visible by the end of the summer.\u00a0 Native to Asia, it&#8217;s been called &#8220;the vine that ate the South&#8221; &#8211; and that&#8217;s not much of a stretch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-274 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg?resize=584%2C438\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg?w=800 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg?resize=768%2C576 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-Kudzu.jpg?resize=400%2C300 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My last fuel stop for the day was in a town named Florala &#8211; and you guessed it, right on the Florida\/Alabama border.\u00a0 That got me thinking &#8211; how many border towns are there that share the name of the states they are next to?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been to several; in Texarkana Main Street is the state border.\u00a0 Walk on one side of the street and you&#8217;re in Texas, the other side is Arkansas.\u00a0 Anyway &#8211; I was going to ask you how man you could come up with but someone has already figured it out.\u00a0 These border cities even have a name.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_border_towns_in_the_United_States_with_portmanteau_names\">Portmanteau<\/a> names are a linguistic blend of words and that link will take you to a list of the towns if you&#8217;re interested &#8211; many that I&#8217;ve never heard of.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-275 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg?resize=300%2C300 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg?resize=768%2C768 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lennysride.com\/2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/23-RC.jpg?w=800 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>While I was at the gas station in Florala, I noticed a big rack of Moon Pies.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a long time since I&#8217;ve had a Moon Pie but they <strong>shore am gud<\/strong>.\u00a0 Wonder if they have a RC Cola to go with it &#8211; that would be perfect!!\u00a0 And so, there I was &#8211; standing next to my motorcycle and finally shedding some of my cold weather gear, enjoying a true southern treat &#8211; RC Cola and a Moon Pie.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fairly short ride from Florala to Pensacola and I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and get on the Interstate &#8211;
